INTERIM STABILIZATION THERAPY (IST)

Interim Stabilization Therapy also known as IST is a temporary solution for a new cavity, loss of a filling or for improved aesthetics on a tooth or teeth. This procedure often buys time until a client can see a dentist weather it be due to cost or their schedule. This is a simple method for children who have a baby tooth with a cavity and are fearful of needles. Doing an IST on a baby tooth not only saves on cost but there are no needles for this procedure. The added bonus of doing an IST on a baby tooth is the material emits a healing fluoride compound which enables the tooth to heal within often buying enough time until the tooth is lost. I will discuss this extremely simple procedure and further benefits in more detail.

The material which is used is a glass ionomer cement. Equal parts of powder and liquid are mixed and placed in cavity, broken tooth or for aesthetic reasons and shaped while setting on its own. If the tooth needing the IST is on a biting surface then the bite is checked with articulating paper and adjusted so that it is not high thus lasting longer. It is white in colour and it is appealing to the eyes. This procedure rarely takes longer than 10 minutes. IST’s are extremely affordable compared to regular composite resin fillings so for people who do not have insurance this is ideal as they can have this done and buy time to see a dentist for a more permanent restoration. Most IST’s last at least 2 months and can last up to 2 years or longer.

In closing an IST is a simple and affordable temporary filling that buys clients time to see a dentist. It is aesthetically pleasing and can last up to 2 years and in some cases even longer. The best part NO needles are required!
