ELECTRIC TOOTHBRUSHES

So you are thinking of investing in an electric toothbrush either for yourself or for a gift. With Christmas around the corner this makes a great gift! I will be discussing types of electric brushes and what qualities they should possess, best places to buy and lastly the technique in order to get the maximum benefit with minimum mess.

First of all invest a good quality electric brush such as the Oral B (pictured below) or Sonicare by Philips. You do not need to spend a fortune on one. You do not to pay extra for all the bells and whistles but just a basic one that has some different settings such as sensitive, gum care or whitening to name a few. You do want to find an electric brush that has a pressure sensor so if you are using too much force it will beep at you or in some models will shut off completely. A pen grasp is all you need when using an electric brush as you can actually wear your gums away if using an electric brush too aggressively. Most electric brushes have a timer that lasts for 2 full minutes so you are brushing longer and they often have signals to move onto next quadrant. Most electric brushes will stay charged for over a week and is ideal when travelling. Costco is likely the best bang for your buck, although they often sell them in a two pack. The replacement heads should be changed every 3 months and most electric brushes have an indicator light that comes on when you need to change it. Replacement heads again can be found at Costco and are reasonably priced. Walmart and Shopper’s Drugmart also sells a variety of different models some of which will go on sale especially around the holidays. Lastly and quite important if you do not want a mess in your bathroom is to brush with your lips lightly closed around the brush. This keeps all the toothpaste inside your mouth instead of on your counter and mirror.

In closing, when purchasing an electric brush don’t cheap out and buy a spin brush. I recommend both the Oral B and Sonicare electric brushes. They both last upwards of 10 years if you maintain them. Costco, Walmart and Shopper’s Drugmart all carry different kinds and models. Lastly, remember to keep your lips closed while brushing to avoid a mess!
